While new in the U.S. market, full slab porcelain for kitchen countertops has already proven itself in the European market to have all the best characteristics that people love in granite, quartzite or marble slabs.
Then what is the difference? – It’s a question you may ask, and the answer is quite simple: full slab porcelain has the beautiful natural stone characteristics, but they come without the hassle.
Natural stone can have such as fissures, but full slab porcelain does not stain or etch like some natural stones can.
It might sound overselling, but these porcelain slabs do live up to such hype, so lets break it all down.
What does porcelain as a material mean in countertops?
Porcelain countertops have been used in Europe for decades now and we finally get to jump on this popular and incredibly practical trend in the United States as well.
They are designed to be very durable and are made with heating a mixture of white china clay and powdered china stone, heated at over 2600 Fahrenheit, and coated with a pigmented glaze to imitate natural stones.
As they are man-made, they are non-porous and scratch and heat-resistant, which means that they are perfectly functional without the high maintenance requirements that can come with some natural stone countertops.
Full slab porcelain comes in a standard size of approximately 126”x63”, which allows for infinite design possibilities to fit any home.
Durability
Being man-made, porcelain slabs are extremely durable as countertops: you can dice or slice essentially anything without worrying about damage on the surface, however this will dull your knife, so we do recommend using a cutting board.
Having non-porous porcelain countertops will also allow you to work on the surface without getting them stained from any food or condiments that you may use to prepare your meals.
They are made at very high temperature (remember, over 2600 degrees!), resulting in a very high heat resistance - we still recommend using a trivet with a hot pot or pan, just because of the extreme difference in temperature between your cool countertops and a very hot pot/pan.
As we mentioned earlier, they are very low maintenance (especially compared to marble or light colored granite) which in the case of porcelain countertops means that any spills can easily be wiped off with a soft damp cloth and some mild detergent, making porcelain the easiest countertop surface to work on.
